CDU Core Technology Empowers Stable and Efficient Operation of Liquid Cooling Data Centers

2026-07-04

With the rapid iteration of AI computing, machine learning and high-performance computing, modern data centers are facing surging thermal density, making traditional air cooling unable to adapt to high-load chip heat dissipation demands. As the core hub of liquid cooling systems, the Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU) undertakes key heat exchange tasks between primary and secondary loops, serving as the core guarantee for safe and efficient operation of high density server cooling scenarios. Integrating professional design principles, engineering calculation, standardized selection and full-cycle operation and maintenance, CDU has become an essential core device to support the stable construction of liquid cooling for AI GPU data center.

The widespread adoption of CDU in liquid cooling data centers solves two major industry pain points of traditional cooling systems. Outdoor cold source equipment such as cooling towers and chillers are far away from server rooms, and direct delivery of outdoor cooling water will cause excessive pressure loss, pipeline scaling and equipment corrosion, threatening stable IT operation. Meanwhile, high-precision server hardware can only operate stably with professional dielectric liquid cooling fluid featuring insulation and anti-corrosion properties, which is completely different from ordinary cooling water. Relying on high-efficiency plate heat exchangers, the CDU realizes full physical isolation of primary and secondary loop media, achieving zero-contamination heat transfer to guarantee long-term stable operation of data center cooling systems.

CDU adopts a mature dual-loop independent circulation architecture, forming a stable seven-step closed-loop heat exchange cycle. The primary loop connects outdoor cold sources to absorb and discharge equipment heat, while the secondary loop directly serves internal liquid-cooled servers. In the standard operating cycle, 32-37°C high-temperature primary water enters the CDU for heat exchange, and the heat is transferred to the secondary loop before the primary water flows back to the cooling tower for heat dissipation. The secondary coolant is cooled to 18-25°C and delivered to liquid-cooled cabinets, efficiently supporting GPU server liquid cooling and realizing 24-hour uninterrupted and stable heat dissipation for high-density computing hardware.

The stable and energy-efficient operation of CDU systems relies on well-matched core components and standardized manifold design. The plate heat exchanger supports efficient heat transfer with multiple specifications to meet different cooling load demands. Equipped with variable-frequency circulation pumps complying with pump similarity laws, the system realizes dynamic speed regulation with load changes, reducing overall power consumption by 30% to 50% and building a low-carbon energy saving liquid cooling system. In terms of pipeline design, the flow speed and branch pressure difference are precisely controlled, with independent regulating valves configured for each loop to ensure uniform cooling capacity distribution and avoid local overheating or energy waste.

Standardized calculation and scientific selection are the premises of reliable CDU operation. Taking a 500kW high-density data center project with 10 cabinets and 50% glycol coolant as an example, a 15% engineering margin is reserved for actual load calculation, with the final matched refrigeration capacity reaching 575kW and the secondary loop volume flow calculated at 52 m³/h. Combined with on-site pipeline resistance and elevation conditions, the project selects a 600kW CDU device tailored for rack level liquid cooling scenarios with 60 m³/h flow rate and 30m rated head, and adopts an N+1 redundant configuration with standby equipment, effectively eliminating system shutdown risks.

Full-cycle standardized operation and maintenance and standardized construction are key to extending CDU service life and stabilizing cooling performance. Daily and weekly inspection mechanisms cover equipment operating status, supply and return water temperature, operating pressure, liquid level, filter pressure difference and coolant quality monitoring, with targeted troubleshooting solutions for common faults. Scientific and reasonable layout is particularly critical for row level liquid cooling, helping avoid typical construction pitfalls including insufficient flow margin, missing expansion tank configuration and unflushed pipeline welding residues.

As a core facility for modern data center thermal management, CDU has formed a complete set of mature design formulas, operating indicators and scenario-based selection standards. According to the scale and application scenario of data centers, matching configurations of N, N+1 and 2N redundancy can be adopted for edge, commercial and core computer rooms respectively. Its accurate cooling distribution, efficient heat exchange and intelligent energy-saving capabilities perfectly fit the rapid development of container data center liquid cooling, empowering high-efficiency, low-carbon and stable operation of various liquid cooling data centers and supporting the sustainable development of high-density AI computing infrastructure.
